In the beginning was the Word

Today's reading Hebrews 1:1-4

Today's Blog

In these last days God has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.” (Hebrews 1:2)

.

From the opening verses of the Bible, two fundamental truths about God and our world are immediately made clear: God made everything and he did this by his spoken word (Gen.1:1-3; Ps.33:6). The New Testament tells us that Jesus was instrumental in both these acts. Jesus is the Word of God “through whom all things were made” (Jn.1:1-3). And he is the Word who became flesh in order to reveal God to us (Jn.1:14).

.

Both these truths are key to the meaning of life:

1) God has made us. We are creatures, he is the Creator. He made us, and he made us for a purpose. Jesus Christ is central to that. “All things were created by him and for him” (Col.1:16).

2) God has spoken to us. We could never know God unless he had first revealed himself and he’s done that through Jesus. It’s only through him that we can come to the Father (Jn.14:6).

.

It’s all summed up in the words of St. Augustine: “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you”. The letter of Hebrews shows us the centrality of Jesus in God’s purposes, and therefore calls us to make him central in our own hearts and lives.
