Don’t fear persecution

.

Peter now begins a new section dealing with the problem of persecution by unbelievers. This was clearly being experienced by his readers, as he’s already mentioned it several times (1:6; 2:12,15,19; 3:9). Now he addresses it specifically and at length (through to 4:19).

.

Generally, the best way to defuse opposition is to do good to our opponents (13). This is both our Christian calling (3:9) and also the way to earn toleration and respect from our unbelieving neighbours (2:12; Mt.5:16). We should “make every effort to live in peace with everyone” (Heb.12:14) and enjoy such times (Acts 9:31). But there will be periods when persecution comes, just because we believe in Jesus and follow him (Acts 9:1; 2 Tim.3:12; Mk.8:35). Being salt and light in the world will often be unpopular (Mt.5:13-14; Jn.3:19-20).

.

So persecution because of our faith shouldn’t surprise us. But neither should it trouble or frighten us, for to “suffer for doing right” is “commendable to God” (2:20) and there’s no greater blessing than God’s commendation (Mt.5:10-12; 25:21). Even in the face of persecution, there is no need to fear for we are secure in his love (Acts 5:41; Rom.8:35-39).
