Our greatest priority
Read Matthew 6:33-34
.
The whole thrust of the Sermon on the Mount is contained within, “Seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness” (33). The Sermon on the Mount sets out the kingdom lifestyle of those who believe the good news and follow Jesus (Mk.1:14-15). The blessing of the kingdom is promised to those who are “poor in spirit” (5:3) and who are “persecuted because of righteousness” (5:10) i.e. the kingdom righteousness of the heart that fulfils the intention of the law (5:17-48).
.
All of this is what we should pray for: “Your kingdom come, your will be done” (6:10). And not only pray it but actively seek it too, by living under God’s rule so that all we do reflects his values. We are “to live lives worthy of God, who calls us into his kingdom and glory” (1 Th.2:12). That’s a high and holy calling which can only be pursued by reliance on him (6:11-13).
.
When that’s our priority, our daily security and provision can be entrusted to him. So for a third time Jesus says, “Therefore, do not worry” (34). Yes, each day will have trouble, but because our living is rooted in our heavenly calling, we fix our eyes on Jesus and are able to walk with him, one day at a time (Heb.3:1; 12:1-2; Jas.4:13-15).
