I believe in the Holy Spirit

The Creed moves on from the Father and the Son to the Holy Spirit. Hard as it is to understand how God can be one yet also three distinct persons, the New Testament often refers to God in this way (e.g. Matt.28:19; 2 Cor.13:14). God is revealed to exist in a relationship of such love and unity that these three Persons are truly One, and for us to know and experience him we need it to be so.

.

At the last supper Jesus told his disciples that he was about to return to the Father who would then send the Spirit to be with them as “another Counsellor” (John 14:16-17,26). By his Spirit, Jesus would be able to be with all his followers anywhere and everywhere (John 16:7). So the coming of the Spirit on the Day of Pentecost is the proof that Jesus is the risen Lord, and that the promised gift of the Spirit is now freely available to all who believe in Jesus (Acts 2:32-39).

.

This is essential as it’s the Spirit who gives life (John 6:63) and who produces godly fruit both in us (Gal.5:22-23) and through us (Matt.10:19-20). There can be no living the Christian live without the Spirit. Our part is to rely on him in daily trust and obedience: “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit” (Gal.5:25).
