From its first verse the Bible declares that God is the creator of the entire universe (Gen.1:1) and his work of creation is then often referred to. It's foundational to our understanding of his greatness, and of our response to him in faith and worship. “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being” (Rev.4:11).
.
Yes, it is “by faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command” (Heb.11:3). The concept is so mind-boggling in its vastness and wonder that many dismiss it, but the alternative that it happened by chance from nothingness is to many others a much less convincing explanation – and either view is an expression of faith. In any case, the more important question is not "how" it came about but "why".
.
“The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth” (Acts 17:24). God has made us for a purpose and has a claim on our lives. Only when we acknowledge God as our personal creator (Ps.139:13-14) can we begin to discover that. “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you” (St. Augustine).
