"God, the Almighty"
In the Old Testament, God is many times referred to as the Almighty (e.g. Gen.17:1; Psalm 91:1; Isaiah 44:6). The final book of the Bible, Revelation, also emphasises that he is the Lord God Almighty (e.g. Rev.1:8; 4:8; 19:6; 21:22). It’s a word that suggests possession of all power and authority, and which reminds us that ultimately God is sovereign over all human rulers... and also over every human being.
.
Because he is almighty, “nothing is impossible with God” (Luke 1:37; Matt.19:26) and “he is able to do immeasurably more than all that we ask or imagine” (Eph.3:20). His power is infinite, though what he does will always be qualified by his other attributes and his own holy will – God cannot lie, do evil or deny himself.
.
And, wonderfully, “his power is at work in us” (Eph.3:20). We are created in his image and therefore derive from him the ability and strength to do what he has created us for. His power is known best in our weakness, when our self-effort and self-reliance are exposed as inadequate and we rely instead on the power of his Spirit (Zech.4:6; 2 Cor.12:9-10). “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble... The Lord Almighty is with us” (Psalm 46:1,7).
