"I believe in God"

Believing in the existence of God is just the starting point of faith, or it should be. What – or who – is God, and what relevance does he have to our lives? The Apostles’ Creed goes on to give a partial answer to these questions, but inevitably God is beyond either our definition or our comprehension.

.

Which is why the Bible’s opening words simply declare, “In the beginning, God...” (Gen.1:1). God is the supreme being, beyond time and space yet present throughout and actively involved in every part of our human story. He is the living God, great and awesome, who longs for us to search after him and find him (Acts 17:24-28). Yet unless he had taken the initiative and revealed himself to us we could never have known him.

.

The Bible is God’s revelation to us, seen supremely through the coming of Jesus, the Word of God who uniquely “has made him known” (John 1:1-2,14,18). In Jesus, we grasp that God is personal, a God of salvation, a God of love. A God not just be believed in, but a God to be trusted in everything, in the confidence that nothing can separate us from his love (Rom.8:37-39). “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise – in God I trust and am not afraid” (Psalm 56:3-4).
